Infiniti May Abandon Electric Vehicle Strategy for a Manual Sports Sedan

Infiniti is facing a challenging period with declining sales compared to a decade ago and increased instability within the automotive sector. To breathe new life into the brand, the Japanese manufacturer has unveiled a plan that is likely to thrill car enthusiasts.

The company is preparing to launch the second-generation Q50 in the United States, which is said to share its platform with Japan’s iconic Skyline sedan. It will be equipped with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine borrowed from the Nissan Z, delivering over 450 horsepower to the rear wheels and featuring a manual gearbox.

"Individuals familiar with the project," who communicated with the Automotive News, revealed that Infiniti is also exploring a high-performance Q50 Red Sport variant. Tiago Castro, Vice President of Infiniti Americas, described the revamped Q50 as "bold and unexpected."

After discontinuing the Q50 following the 2024 model year, Infiniti's lineup was left with only four models, all of which are crossovers and SUVs. The brand also discontinued its coupe, the Q60, in 2022.

Shift from Electric to Performance

Originally, Infiniti intended to replace the Q50 with an electric vehicle. However, shifting market dynamics have led the automaker to postpone these electric plans in favor of developing a second-generation gasoline-powered Q50. The new sedan is anticipated to hit the market in the latter half of 2027, remaining a few years away. Infiniti recently showcased a teaser for the Q50S at its national dealer meeting in Las Vegas.

Design and Heritage

According to sources, the upcoming model is described as "visceral" and "impractical," featuring sleek headlights and circular taillights reminiscent of the Skyline's design. Castro emphasized that this new vehicle represents an opportunity to reconnect with the brand’s fundamental roots.
