The Toyota Hilux is known worldwide for its durability and toughness, but speed isn’t usually associated with this rugged pickup. Mighty Car Mods decided to rewrite that story with their heavily modified third-generation Hilux, turning it into a tire-burning, turbocharged powerhouse.

The team discovered the truck online, already sporting an eye-catching paint job by its previous owner. Their mission was clear: upgrade nearly every mechanical aspect to unleash serious performance. After all, if you want to enjoy aggressive tire smoke and thrilling drives, you need plenty of horsepower.

Originally, this Hilux’s engine likely produced less than 100 horsepower. To change that, Marty and Moog swapped the stock unit for a more potent 2.7-liter four-cylinder 2TR engine from a newer Hilux model, which delivers about 160 hp right out of the box. But the real magic comes with the addition of a turbocharger, boosting power and giving the engine a freer breath.

Beyond the engine, the duo upgraded the brakes to handle the extra speed, installed a front-mount intercooler, crafted a custom three-inch exhaust system, fitted a bespoke driveshaft, and added a limited-slip rear differential. The vehicle’s electronics run on a Haltech ECU, which is essential because this Hilux uses a Subaru drive-by-wire throttle pedal.

After detailing all the modifications, Moog takes the truck for a spin. The turbocharger’s whistle and wastegate flutter fill the air, signaling the impressive increase in power. The highlight comes when Moog drifts the truck, bursting into laughter — a clear sign of the fun this build delivers.
