Audi RS E-Tron GT Performance: An Undervalued Electric Powerhouse

Advantages

  • Performance rivals the Porsche Taycan
  • Extended range and faster charging capabilities
  • Elegant and aerodynamic design

Disadvantages

  • Absence of a one-pedal driving mode
  • Interior quality doesn't justify the high cost
  • Outdated screen graphics

Audi has made significant progress since launching its first E-Tron model, showcased by the 2026 RS E-Tron GT Performance. This four-door electric sedan is a powerhouse, boasting an impressive 912 horsepower from its dual motors, further enhanced by a newly engineered rear motor. The acceleration is truly remarkable.

Associate editor Billy Rehbock remarked, “This vehicle redefines what fast acceleration means,” highlighting its capability to reach 60 mph in just 2.2 seconds. Features editor Scott Evans praises Audi’s most potent model to date, equating its performance to the Porsche Taycan while noting its lack of recognition, describing it as “criminally underrated.”

Similar to the Taycan, the latest E-Tron GT offers a significantly improved range compared to its predecessor, thanks to a lighter and larger battery with enhanced chemistry and cooling systems. It now boasts an EPA-rated range of 278 miles and achieved 294 miles during testing, surpassing the official estimates. Additionally, Audi has increased the vehicle’s peak charging speed to an impressive 320 kilowatts.

The test model featured a striking red exterior that highlighted its modern contours, complemented by an interior dominated by black and gray tones with premium materials like leather, suede, and forged carbon fiber. Unlike the Taycan GT, the Audi E-Tron GT includes physical buttons for essential functions such as climate control, freeing up space on the center console. The vehicle also offers thoughtful details like adjustable air vents that don’t require navigating digital menus. However, the on-screen graphics could use an upgrade to match the sleek new interfaces seen in the 2026 Audi A6.

A standout feature of the E-Tron GT is its active damper control suspension, which lifts the vehicle when doors are opened to facilitate easier entry and exit. Opinions are mixed on its practicality versus being merely a novelty. For it to be genuinely useful, the suspension should engage immediately upon door opening, but there were instances of delayed activation.

Despite expectations for a stiff ride from an Audi RS model, the E-Tron GT offers a comfortable experience without being overly harsh. The car handles exceptionally well on winding roads, supported by an adaptive suspension system that minimizes squat, dive, and body roll. However, the braking system leaves room for improvement, as it didn’t fully inspire confidence in high-stress scenarios.

The vehicle’s sleek roofline does reduce rear headroom, but the aesthetic appeal compensates for this limitation. The trunk is relatively small, though it includes a front trunk (frunk). Interestingly, the frunk release button is located on the driver’s door panel, making it accessible only when the door is open.

In summary, while the E-Tron GT has minor drawbacks and comes with a premium price tag, it represents the best of Audi’s offerings, showcasing exceptional power, distinctive style, and impressive performance.

This evaluation was part of our 2026 Car of the Year (COTY) testing, where each vehicle is assessed based on six key criteria: efficiency, design, safety, engineering excellence, value, and performance of intended function. Eligible vehicles must be all-new or significantly updated.
