Meet the Volkswagen Golf R420 prototype on spy pictures for the first time during its testing on the Nürburgring in Germany.

The automaker revealed the Golf R400 concept over a year ago. Then a lot of reports about the chance it will be produced appeared. The producer has stated about its intention in April. Finally, the first spy pictures of the prototype have appeared before the launch in 2016. The price is set to be somewhere below the €50,000, but more than the €39,000 for the Golf R.

The concept could boast a 2.0-litre V4 turbocharged petrol engine providing 400 hp. The production variant’s output will be enhanced up to 420 hp. The model’s name comes hence. Paparazzi who have seen the vehicle assure that the prototype had sound of a five-cylinder, but this information has not been confirmed by the automaker yet.

Independent from the motor, power will be sent to a 4-MOTION four-wheel drive system. The VW has not revealed what gearbox will be used. It can be a DSG. The spied prototype is definitely based on the Golf R having 300 hp. Though, it differs with bigger alloy wheels, a large roof-mounted wing, front spoiler lip and a lowered sports suspension.

The VW Golf R400 and R420 are scheduled to arrive at the major auto show next year. It may happen at the event in Geneva in March.
