Driving Ban in German Hamburg to be Implemented in 2034

The local government of the second largest city of Germany plans to phase out cars from the city centre during the next two decades.

The rationale behind such decision is of the domain of environmental protection and is a part of Green Network project aiming to fight greenhouse effect. Further steps will imply turning traffic roads into green zones enabling the residents to spend quality time outdoors and go in for sports. The total area of such zones is anticipated to cover almost 40% of Hamburg.

Currently 30 people working 24/7 shifts are busy implementing the plan. With issuing of the ban those who will need to get into city centre will have to refer to public transport, individual ecological transportation means or simply walk. The plan has aroused a fair share of debates, but the local Green Party leaders are very confident about it. The reason of their enthusiasm is the way of life of Hamburg residents: the city comes as a rather progressive one in Germany, with people actively supporting green movements.
