The first-generation Volkswagen Gol (G1) subcompact hatchback was produced in Brazil from 1980 to 1994.

The first-generation Volkswagen Gol subcompact hatchback (platform code G1 / BX) was introduced in 1980 by Volkswagen do Brasil as a entry-level vehicle tailored for South America. Constructed on the BX architecture with a longitudinal front-engine layout, the Gol G1 formed the hub of a versatile vehicle family that yielded sedan, wagon, and pickup derivatives.

Early Gol G1 models used a 1.3-liter or 1.6-liter air-cooled flat-four engine, but from 1985 onward transitioned to water-cooled inline-four AP-series engines displacing 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0 liters. In 1988, Volkswagen released the Gol GTi, marking the first South American production vehicle equipped with electronic fuel injection.
