VAZ Lada Samara I (2108 / 2109 / 21099) photos

The first-generation Lada Samara, originally marketed domestically under the Sputnik nameplate, marked a pivotal evolution for AvtoVAZ by transitioning to a transverse front-wheel-drive architecture. The chassis, handling dynamics, and engine thermodynamics were developed in close technical collaboration with Porsche. Production commenced in 1984 with the three-door hatchback (VAZ-2108), later expanding to include the five-door hatchback (VAZ-2109) in 1987 and the notchback sedan (VAZ-21099) in 1990. The vehicle featured a newly developed family of overhead-cam inline-four petrol engines displacing 1.1, 1.3, and 1.5 liters, mated to 4-speed or 5-speed manual gearboxes. A major mid-cycle cosmetic update in the early 1990s introduced full-length front fenders, replacing the distinctive plastic nose cone, accompanied by updated dashboard trims. Later production runs introduced multi-point electronic fuel injection. The Samara was widely exported throughout Europe, where foreign distributors also created bespoke convertible variants, remaining in production until 2004.
