The Lada Niva (originally VAZ-2121, later rebranded as Lada 4x4 and Niva Legend) is a landmark vehicle in off-road history, being one of the world's first mass-produced four-wheel-drive passenger cars with a monocoque unibody structure. Designed with permanent four-wheel drive, a lockable center differential, low-range transfer case, and independent front coil-spring suspension, it combined genuine cross-country capability with everyday passenger comfort. Early variants utilized a 1.6-liter carbureted inline-four engine paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox. A major overhaul occurred in 1993 (VAZ-21213 Taiga), introducing an enlarged 1.7-liter engine, a 5-speed manual transmission, a revised vertical rear tailgate opening to the bumper line, and a redesigned interior. Subsequent updates added multi-point fuel injection, power steering, ABS brakes, long-wheelbase five-door versions (VAZ-2131), and urban styling packages. Over decades, the Niva achieved legendary cult status globally, being officially exported to Europe, South America, Oceania, and Canada. The model remains in continuous production as the Niva Legend.
