The first generation international Toyota Previa (XR10/XR20 series) debuted in 1990, captivating the automotive world with its futuristic egg-shaped body styled by Calty Design Research. The vehicle utilized an innovative Supplemental Accessory Drive System (SADS) with an inline-four engine installed midship under the front floor seats, canted at a 75-degree angle. This mid-engine layout yielded a completely flat interior floor and exceptional 50:50 weight distribution. The versatile three-row cabin accommodated up to eight passengers with optional rotating second-row captain's chairs.

The primary engine was a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter 2TZ-FE four-cylinder generating 138 horsepower. To satisfy demand for higher performance, Toyota introduced the Previa S/C in 1994, equipped with a Roots-type supercharged 2.4-liter 2TZ-FZE engine delivering 160 horsepower. European models were offered with a 2.2-liter 3C-T turbodiesel (101 hp). Transmissions included five-speed manuals and four-speed automatics. Drive choices encompassed rear-wheel drive and All-Trac full-time four-wheel drive. Production for international markets ran through 1999.
