Development of the Tacoma began in 1989, and series production launched in 1995. The vehicle was designed specifically for the North American market with a focus on ride comfort, safety, and handling, distinguishing it from the more utilitarian Hilux. The first generation was built on a new platform and offered three cab configurations: Regular Cab, Xtracab (extended), and Double Cab (introduced in 2000). The engine lineup included a 2.4-liter (142 hp) and a 2.7-liter (150 hp) inline-four, as well as a 3.4-liter V6 producing 190 hp. Both rear-wheel and four-wheel-drive configurations were available.

During its production run, the model received two notable facelifts in 1997 and 2000, updating the grille, headlights, and interior design. In 1998, the TRD Off-Road package debuted, featuring a locking rear differential and upgraded suspension. The Tacoma earned a strong reputation for reliability, though it faced criticism for severe frame corrosion issues that led to a major recall. Production of the first generation ended in 2004.
