The first generation Toyota Mirai, designated JPD10, debuted in November 2014 as a pioneering hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV). Built on a front-wheel-drive architecture sharing components with the Prius, the four-door sedan featured distinctive exterior styling dominated by prominent front air intakes designed to feed oxygen into the fuel cell stack. The futuristic interior accommodated four individual seats, touch-sensitive climate controls, and high-mounted digital displays.

The JPD10 powertrain integrated a 114 kW (155 hp) fuel cell stack, two carbon-fiber hydrogen storage tanks rated at 70 MPa, a nickel-metal hydride buffer battery, and an electric drive motor. The vehicle delivered an operating range of approximately 500 to 650 kilometers per fill-up, emitting only pure water vapor from its exhaust system. Distributed in selected markets across Japan, North America, and Europe, the Mirai served as a technological halo car, proving the commercial viability of zero-emission fuel cell technology.
