Unveiled in late 1997 and launching globally for 1998, the third-generation Suzuki Jimny (JB23 series for Japanese kei market, JB33/JB43 for international markets) featured rounded bodywork while maintaining an uncompromising off-road design. It was built around a rigid ladder-frame chassis with coil-sprung 3-link solid live axles at both ends and a vacuum-locking hub part-time 4WD system allowing push-button engagement on the move.

Domestic Japanese models utilized a 660 cc turbocharged K6A engine delivering 64 hp. Global models were powered by a 1.3-liter G13BB engine, replaced in 2000 by the 1.3-liter M13A DOHC VVT engine producing 85 hp. European markets also offered a 1.5-liter Renault-supplied dCi turbodiesel option. Over its 20-year production span, key updates in 2004 and 2012 refreshed dashboard styling, introduced push-button 4WD transfer controls, added hood air scoops, and updated front bumper grilles.
