The first generation Subaru Libero microvan was exported from 1983 to 1993 based on the Sambar platform.
Produced from 1983 to 1993, the first-generation Subaru Libero (E10/E12 code) was the export market counterpart to the Japanese Domingo. Despite measuring under 3.5 meters in length, its high-roof mini-MPV design accommodated up to 6 passengers with rear sliding doors. Power came from rear-mounted 1.0-liter EF10 and 1.2-liter EF12 3-cylinder petrol engines. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.
It featured versatile seating transformations including swiveling seats and flat bed conversions alongside push-button part-time 4WD. A 1986 facelift updated front lighting and bumper contours before production wrapped up in 1993. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort. Robust mechanical reliability across the drivetrain and suspension components helped establish this generation as a benchmark choice within its competitive market segment worldwide.
