The first-generation Subaru Impreza (body codes GC for sedan, GF for wagon/hatchback, and GM for coupe) was launched in November 1992 as a compact passenger car designed to compete in the C-segment. Built on a shortened Legacy platform, the Impreza featured naturally aspirated horizontally-opposed EJ-series engines ranging from 1.5 to 2.2 liters. While entry-level models were available with front-wheel drive, the cornerstone of the lineup was Subaru's signature Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.

Throughout its production life, the model received several subtle facelifts modifying the front fascia, headlights, and interior trim. The generation became world-famous due to the high-performance WRX and STI variants featuring turbocharged 2.0-liter engines producing up to 280 hp, which dominated the World Rally Championship. An off-road-styled wagon variant, the Impreza Outback Sport, was also offered. First-generation production concluded in 2000. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort. Robust mechanical reliability across the drivetrain and suspension components helped establish this generation as a benchmark choice within its competitive market segment worldwide.
