The second generation BRZ introduced a larger 2.4-liter FA24D flat-four engine, 50% higher torsional rigidity, and EyeSight safety technology.
Revealed in November 2020, the second-generation Subaru BRZ (ZD8 platform) debuted for the 2022 model year. While evolutionarily refining its lightweight layout, chassis torsional rigidity increased by 50% through targeted structural reinforcements and aluminum body panels. The engine upgraded to a 2.4-liter FA24D naturally aspirated flat-four generating 228–235 hp and 250 Nm of torque, significantly improving mid-range responsiveness. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.
Drivetrain choices remain a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters. Automatic models gained Subaru's EyeSight safety system from launch, which was later adapted to manual transmission models in 2023 alongside the performance-focused BRZ tS model. Production continues. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort. Robust mechanical reliability across the drivetrain and suspension components helped establish this generation as a benchmark choice within its competitive market segment worldwide.
