Subaru Baja I (BT) gallery (2002–2006)

Manufactured from 2002 to 2006 at the Indiana assembly plant, the sole generation of the Subaru Baja (BT code) adapted the third-generation Outback platform into a 4-door open-bed utility vehicle. Recalling the heritage of the Subaru BRAT, its standout feature was the 'Switchback' pass-through door behind the rear seats, expanding bed length into the passenger cabin for longer items. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.

Power originally came from a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter EJ251 flat-four (165 hp), supplemented in 2004 by the Baja Turbo model with a 210 hp turbocharged EJ255 engine. Drivetrain choices included a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic with Symmetrical AWD. Production concluded in April 2006 with approximately 30,000 units built. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort. Robust mechanical reliability across the drivetrain and suspension components helped establish this generation as a benchmark choice within its competitive market segment worldwide.
