Produced from 1985 to 1991, the first-generation Subaru Alcyone (AX platform, marketed as the XT in North America and Vortex in Australia) was named after the brightest star in the Pleiades cluster. Featuring an ultra-aerodynamic wedge profile (Cd 0.29), pop-up headlights, and an aircraft-inspired asymmetric steering wheel, power came from the 1.8-liter EA82T turbo flat-four (112–136 hp) or the 2.7-liter ER27 flat-six engine (145 hp in Alcyone VX trims). The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.
Technological features included Full-Time 4WD, height-adjustable pneumatic air suspension, and digital instrument cluster graphics before production ended in 1991. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort.
