The final fourth-generation sports car featured aerodynamic composite body panels and powerful LS-family engines.
The fourth-generation Pontiac Firebird retained the F-body platform, featuring a sweeping aerodynamic body utilizing composite body panels. The engine lineup featured a base V6 and high-output V8 options, culminating in the legendary LT1 and LS1 engines shared with the Corvette, mated to manual or automatic transmissions. It was available in liftback and convertible styles, alongside iconic Formula, Trans Am, and anniversary editions. In 1998, the model received a major facelift updating the front fascia and mechanical components. Production ended in 2002 due to declining sports car sales and General Motors restructuring.
