Pontiac Bonneville VIII (H-body) gallery (1987–1991)
The eighth-generation Bonneville revolutionized the nameplate by transitioning to front-wheel drive and introducing the performance SSE trim.
Launched for 1987, the eighth-generation Pontiac Bonneville executed the most radical engineering transformation in the car's lineage by shifting to GM's front-wheel-drive unibody H-body architecture. Embodying Pontiac's 'We Build Excitement' marketing ethos, the Bonneville was sold strictly as a four-door mid-to-full-size sport sedan across LE, SE, and flagship SSE trim levels. Under the hood, all models were powered by GM's venerable 3.8-liter (3800 Series I) V6 engine producing between 150 and 165 horsepower, exclusively paired with the smooth-shifting 4-speed Hydra-Matic 4T60 automatic transaxle. The high-performance SSE trim introduced in 1988 brought dramatic ground-effects body cladding, eight-way adjustable articulating bucket seats with pneumatic lumbar support, digital driver information centers, and 16-inch cross-lace alloy wheels. Anti-lock brakes and level-ride air suspension were key technological additions. Sold across North America, this generation restored critical and commercial acclaim to the Bonneville, turning it into a legitimate euro-influenced sport sedan.
