Pontiac Bonneville III gallery (1961–1964)

The third-generation Bonneville celebrated for stacked headlights, sculpted bodywork, and thunderous 421 Super Duty V8 engines.

Produced from 1961 through 1964, the third-generation Pontiac Bonneville refined full-size luxury performance on an updated GM B-body platform. Styling transitioned toward sculpted perimeter-frame proportions with Pontiac's signature split-grille front fascia. Available body styles included two-door hardtop coupes, four-door hardtops, four-door sedans, convertibles, and six-to-nine passenger Custom Safari wagons. Propulsion came from the stalwart 389 cubic inch (6.4L) V8 in multiple carburation setups, but the generation became immortalized by the introduction of the 421 cubic inch (6.9L) V8 in 1962, including the ultra-rare competition-ready 421 Super Duty V8 pushing over 400 horsepower. Gearboxes included Borg-Warner 3-speed and 4-speed floor-shifted manuals alongside Roto Hydra-Matic and Super Hydra-Matic automatics. The 1963 model year brought a major aesthetic refresh with vertically stacked quad headlamps and squared-off rooflines, followed by refined chrome trim and minor rear-end changes in 1964. Sold throughout the US and Canadian markets, this generation cemented Bonneville's status as a quintessential 1960s full-size American cruiser.
