As NIO's debut production model, the first-generation ES8 full-size crossover featured an all-aluminum body structure, dual-motor AWD, and a spacious seven-seat layout.

The first-generation NIO ES8 full-size flagship crossover entered serial production in 2018 and was produced until 2023 as the brand's inaugural volume vehicle. Constructed on NIO's first-generation platform, it featured an all-aluminum body and chassis structure. The dual-motor all-wheel drive system initially comprised two induction motors generating a combined 653 horsepower and 840 Newton-meters of torque for a zero to 100 km/h time of 4.4 seconds, with later updates incorporating a permanent magnet front motor for enhanced efficiency. Power transfer utilized single-speed reduction gearboxes supported by adaptive air suspension. Available battery capacities included 70 kWh, 84 kWh, and 100 kWh packs compatible with automated battery swapping. The interior offered six-seat or seven-seat configurations with a lounge passenger seat, an 11.3-inch central infotainment touchscreen, the NOMI AI avatar, and the NIO Pilot driver assist suite. Initially sold in China, export deliveries to Norway began in 2021.
