3About this generation
The fifth generation debuted for the 2027 model year as an electric crossover sharing its hardware with the redesigned Nissan Leaf.
The fifth-generation Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback for the 2027 model year marks a radical reinvention of the nameplate, transforming from a traditional internal combustion sports car into a dedicated battery-electric crossover. Engineered on shared EV hardware developed within the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, the vehicle shares its core structural underpinnings, high-voltage systems, and major components with the redesigned Nissan Leaf. The exterior features a five-door crossover-shaped profile equipped with roof rails and modern aerodynamic styling.
The propulsion system is entirely electric, powered by a 75-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack that delivers an EPA-estimated driving range of up to 282 miles. DC fast charging is supported at rates up to 150 kW, enabling a 10 to 80 percent state of charge replenishment in approximately 35 minutes. Additionally, the vehicle comes factory-equipped with a native North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, granting seamless direct access to the Tesla Supercharger network without requiring adapters.
Compared to the fourth-generation Eclipse (4G), which concluded production in 2012 with naturally aspirated four-cylinder and V6 gasoline engines, the fifth generation entirely eliminates internal combustion powertrains in favor of zero-emission electric drive. The traditional two-door coupe and convertible layouts have been replaced by a spacious five-passenger crossover cabin featuring an electrochromic panoramic sunroof and advanced Bose audio.
