The sixth-generation Mitsubishi Colt (Z30 and Z20 platform designations) launched in Japan in 2002 and Europe in 2004. Developed on a joint platform shared with the Smart Forfour, it offered a tall supermini body profile in 3-door and 5-door hatchback forms, as well as a Colt CZC folding hardtop convertible crafted by Pininfarina. Engineering of the Colt VI (Z30) (factory code Z30) emphasized high structural rigidity, aerodynamic efficiency, and optimized interior spatial packaging. Built with reinforced body structures utilizing high-tensile steel alloys, the platform delivered reduced curb weight alongside improved occupant crash protection. The vehicle was distributed globally in multiple configuration packages designed to satisfy diverse market demands and regional regulatory specifications.

Engine choices spanned 1.1-liter, 1.3-liter, and 1.5-liter all-aluminum MIVEC petrol engines, a 150-hp 1.5-liter turbo engine on the Ralliart trim, and a 1.5-liter Di-D turbodiesel. Gearboxes included 5-speed manuals, Allshift automated manuals, and CVTs. A major 2008 facelift introduced Jet Fighter front end styling. The powertrain lineup incorporated efficient engine families paired with robust manual, automatic, or continuously variable transmissions depending on trim selection. Drivetrain engineering integrated advanced suspension tuning and traction management systems. Periodic mid-cycle cosmetic and technical updates refreshed front-end aesthetics, lighting technology, and cabin infotainment features, maintaining competitive positioning across international consumer segments throughout its production lifespan.
