3About this generation
The first-generation MG ZS was a compact crossover that achieved global success and spawned the widely sold ZS EV.
The first-generation MG ZS (factory code ZS11) debuted in late 2016 and launched globally in 2017. Built on SAIC's front-wheel-drive SSA architecture with a front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam setup, the ZS adopted a crossover body style targeting young urban families. Initial petrol powertrains featured a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine and a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder unit developed in collaboration with GM, mated to five-speed manual, six-speed torque-converter automatic, or continuously variable transmissions. In 2018, SAIC launched the battery-electric ZS EV, which gained widespread popularity in Europe and Australia with battery options ranging from 44.5 kWh to 72.6 kWh Long Range variants. A major facelift introduced in 2019 overhauled the front fascia with detached headlamps, enhanced interior materials, and introduced a 1.3-litre turbo engine. It was also marketed as the MG Astor in India and MG VS Hybrid in Southeast Asia.
