14About this generation
The first-generation MG ZS was a driver-focused compact saloon and hatchback engineered on the Rover 45 platform.
The first-generation MG ZS was produced by the British MG Rover Group from 2001 to 2005 as part of the brand's sporting renaissance alongside the ZR and ZT models. Built upon the Rover 45 platform, which traced its technical roots to Honda Civic and Domani architecture featuring front double-wishbone suspension, the MG ZS was offered in four-door saloon and five-door hatchback body styles. Compared to the comfort-oriented Rover 45, MG engineers comprehensively re-engineered the suspension setup with stiffer springs, revised dampers, thicker anti-roll bars, and a quicker steering rack, transforming the car into one of the best-handling front-wheel-drive vehicles of its era. The powertrain lineup consisted of naturally aspirated 1.6-litre and 1.8-litre Rover K-Series petrol four-cylinder engines, a 2.0-litre L-Series turbodiesel, and the flagship 2.5-litre KV6 engine delivering 177 hp in the performance ZS 180 variant. Transmission choices included a five-speed manual gearbox and a Stepspeed CVT available on the 1.8-litre unit. In 2004, the model underwent a significant facelift styled by Peter Stevens, which introduced unified front headlamps, new front and rear bumpers, aggressive wheel-arch spats, and a revised dashboard with circular vents. Primarily sold in the United Kingdom and continental Europe, production ceased in April 2005 following the collapse of the MG Rover Group.
