The first-generation Mercedes-Benz Vito (chassis code W638) commenced production in 1996 in Vitoria, Spain, earning the Van of the Year award in 1996. Engineered with a front-wheel-drive layout and transverse powertrain configuration, the Vito was offered as a cargo panel van, passenger combi, and dual-cab chassis.
Engine offerings included naturally aspirated and turbocharged 2.3-liter diesels, early OM611 common-rail turbodiesels (108 CDI, 110 CDI, 112 CDI), and 2.0/2.3-liter gasoline engines.
