About this generation

First generation of the light commercial van and minibus Mercedes-Benz Vito (W638), produced in Spain from 1996 to 2003.

The first-generation Mercedes-Benz Vito (chassis code W638) commenced production in 1996 in Vitoria, Spain, earning the Van of the Year award in 1996. Engineered with a front-wheel-drive layout and transverse powertrain configuration, the Vito was offered as a cargo panel van, passenger combi, and dual-cab chassis.

Engine offerings included naturally aspirated and turbocharged 2.3-liter diesels, early OM611 common-rail turbodiesels (108 CDI, 110 CDI, 112 CDI), and 2.0/2.3-liter gasoline engines. The vehicle was appreciated across Europe for its compact exterior footprint, low loading sill, and excellent urban maneuverability.

2027 Mercedes-Benz GLC400 EV achieves 356-mile highway range and 3.7-second 0–60 mph in instrumented test

Instrumented testing of the 483-hp dual-motor 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLC400 4Matic EV recorded a 0–60 mph sprint of 3.7 seconds and a 70-mph highway range of 356 miles from its 94.0-kWh battery, surpassing its 350-mile EPA rating. Equipped with air suspension, rear-wheel steering, and a 39.1-inch Hyperscreen, the tested vehicle carried an as-tested price of $85,450.

Mercedes-AMG Develops Next C63 With Both Gasoline and Electric Powertrains

Mercedes-Benz CTO Jörg Burzer confirmed that Affalterbach is developing both internal combustion and battery-electric powertrains for future 63-badged models as the four-cylinder plug-in hybrid C63 exits production. In the meantime, an interim C53 featuring a 443-hp 3.0-liter inline-six engine is expected to take its place.

Replacing the four-cylinder GLC43 and GLC63 models, the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GLC53 4Matic+ pairs a 443-hp 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with all-wheel drive and rear-axle steering. In instrumented testing, the SUV hit 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and outperformed the BMW X3 M50 xDrive and Audi SQ5 on the figure-eight course and in braking.

Equipped with a new 530-hp 4.0-liter twin-turbo flat-plane-crank V-8, the S580 4Matic sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds.
