Unveiled at the 2018 North American International Auto Show, the modern G-Class retained the internal W463 designation despite being 99% newly engineered. The SUV grew wider and longer to dramatically improve cabin space while retaining its iconic ladder-frame chassis, rigid rear axle, and three mechanical differential locks. A major technical leap was the adoption of an independent double-wishbone front suspension co-developed by AMG and electromechanical rack-and-pinion steering for refined road handling.

The updated interior incorporated dual 12.3-inch displays featuring the MBUX digital architecture alongside premium leather and carbon appointments. Motivation comes from 3.0-liter inline-six turbodiesels (G 350 d, G 400 d) and 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8s powering the G 500 and AMG G 63, paired with 9G-TRONIC automatics. A major 2024 update introduced 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrains and the fully electric G 580 with EQ Technology equipped with four independent electric motors.
