About this generation

The second generation featuring sharper styling, Toyota powertrains, and an official launch into North America.

The second-generation Lotus Elise (Series 2) debuted in 2001, built upon an extensively evolved bonded aluminum architecture designed to meet stricter crash regulations. It featured sharper, more aggressive styling, lowered side sills for easier ingress and egress, and revised suspension geometry with Bilstein dampers. Initially, the Series 2 utilized 1.8-liter Rover K-Series engines (122 hp in standard guise and 160 hp in the 111S) with a 5-speed manual. In 2004, Lotus introduced the 111R powered by a Toyota-sourced 1.8-liter 2ZZ-GE engine with VVTL-i delivering 192 hp mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Later additions included the entry-level Elise S (1.8L Toyota 1ZZ-FE, 136 hp) and the supercharged Elise SC (220 hp). Toyota powertrains introduced ABS and airbags, enabling official federalization for the United States and Canadian markets in 2004. Multiple special iterations were produced, including the lightweight Club Racer and various Heritage editions, solidifying the car's global success.
