The first-generation Lincoln Navigator, bearing the factory body code UN173, was introduced in 1997 for the 1998 model year, establishing a new benchmark in the emerging American full-size luxury SUV segment. Engineered on the robust Ford UN173 truck platform, it shared core structural components and sheet metal with the Ford Expedition but stood apart with distinctive exterior styling, an upscale waterfall front grille, extensive sound insulation, and a finely appointed interior rich in leather and wood trim. Initially, power was delivered by a 5.4-liter Triton SOHC 16-valve V8 engine producing 230 horsepower, paired exclusively with a 4-speed heavy-duty 4R100 automatic transmission. In 1999, Lincoln upgraded the powertrain to a high-output 5.4-liter InTech DOHC 32-valve V8 rated at 300 horsepower. The vehicle was offered with either rear-wheel drive or a sophisticated ControlTrac four-wheel-drive system, alongside a load-leveling air suspension. It achieved massive commercial success across North America and the Middle East, setting the foundation for the entire luxury full-size segment.
