Lancia Ypsilon I (Tipo 843) photos

Launched in 2003, the Lancia Ypsilon (Tipo 843) fully adopted the Greek letter's name to replace the predecessor Lancia Y. Built on the architecture of the second-generation Fiat Punto (Project 188 platform), the supermini featured front-wheel drive, a front MacPherson strut suspension, and a rear torsion beam. Offered strictly as a three-door hatchback, its exterior design drew heavy inspiration from legendary historic Lancias like the Ardea and Aurelia, highlighted by a prominent chrome shield grille and central dashboard gauges. The engine lineup expanded significantly, featuring 1.2-litre and 1.4-litre FIRE petrol engines (both 8V and 16V) alongside the highly acclaimed 1.3-litre Multijet common-rail turbo-diesel. Dual-fuel LPG/petrol Ecochic variants were also introduced. Transmission options included 5- and 6-speed manuals alongside the DFN (Dolce Far Niente) automated manual gearbox. A major facelift arrived in late 2006, introducing revised front and rear bumpers, fresh exterior colours, updated interior upholstery, and Fiat's Blue&Me infotainment system. Sold extensively throughout continental Europe, the Tipo 843 remained an outstanding commercial success, particularly among Italian urban buyers who valued its blend of luxury and compact proportions.
