Launched in March 1990, the third-generation Isuzu Gemini (designated JT191) marked the final independently developed passenger car platform engineered entirely by Isuzu before the company transitioned away from mainstream car production. The body style range diversified to include a sleek sedan, a stylish two-door coupe, and a versatile liftback. Mechanically, this generation advanced significantly by introducing high-revving 1.6-liter DOHC 16-valve petrol engines (the 4XE1 family), culminating in turbocharged intercooled variants pushing up to 180 horsepower, alongside efficient turbo-diesel options. A major milestone for the JT191 series was the introduction of a sophisticated full-time all-wheel-drive system (4WD) featured on high-performance trims like the Irmscher R. Compared to the preceding generation, the exterior styling featured much smoother aerodynamic contours and an updated cockpit layout. Marketed as the Isuzu Stylus in North America and retaining a strong enthusiast following in its domestic Japanese market, it remains celebrated for its sharp handling and potent performance variants.
