The first-generation Hyundai Ioniq (AE chassis) premiered in Seoul in January 2016. It achieved a historic automotive milestone by becoming the first car offered exclusively in three electrified powertrains on a single platform: Hybrid (HEV), Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), and All-Electric (EV). The tear-drop body achieved a low drag coefficient of 0.24.

Hybrids paired a 1.6-liter Kappa GDI engine with an electric motor and a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission (141 hp combined). The Ioniq Electric initially featured a 28 kWh battery, which was upgraded during the 2019 facelift to a 38.3 kWh pack providing 136 hp and a 311 km WLTP driving range.
