The first generation of the Holden Statesman luxury sedan, based on the long-wheelbase HQ full-size platform.
The first-generation Holden Statesman debuted in 1971 as part of the HQ model lineup, serving as General Motors' flagship luxury sedan in Australia. Built on an extended rear-wheel-drive platform with a stretched wheelbase, it offered generous interior space and top-tier luxury amenities for passengers. Powertrain choices included a 3.3-liter inline-six engine as well as iconic 4.2-liter (253 ci), 5.0-liter (308 ci), and 5.7-liter (Chevrolet 350 ci) V8 engines. Transmission options ranged from three-speed and four-speed manuals to three-speed Tri-Matic and robust Turbo-Hydramatic automatic gearboxes. Throughout its lifespan, the model underwent several major updates, including the HJ (1974) with a formal front-end restyling, HX (1976) addressing emission standards, HZ (1977) introducing advanced Radial Tuned Suspension for improved dynamics, and the final WB series (1980–1984) featuring completely restyled sheet metal, rectangular headlights, and distinct rear quarter windows. The model was primarily sold in Australia and New Zealand, with exports to South Africa and Pacific regions.
