The second-generation Holden Commodore arrived in 1988 with the VN series, marking a major redesign focused on providing true wide-body interior roominess to rival the Ford Falcon. Built on an enlarged GM V-body architecture blending Opel Omega A and Senator B structural components with robust local engineering, it was offered as a four-door sedan, five-door station wagon, and a popular two-door coupe utility (Ute). Under the bonnet, Holden replaced the previous inline engines with a highly durable imported 3.8-litre Buick LN3/L27 V6 engine featuring electronic multiport fuel injection, alongside the updated Australian 5.0-litre Holden V8.
