About this generation

The first generation of the Australian icon based on GM V-body platform adapted for tough local conditions.

The first-generation Holden Commodore debuted in 1978 as a more compact and fuel-efficient replacement for the traditional full-size Kingswood series. It was engineered on the rear-wheel-drive General Motors V-body platform, cleverly merging the front structure of the Opel Senator A with the passenger cabin and rear of the Opel Rekord E. However, Holden extensively reinforced the chassis, suspension, and body shell to withstand severe Australian Outback road conditions. It was produced in four-door sedan and five-door station wagon body styles. The powertrain lineup featured 1.9-litre Starfire inline-fours, Holden 2.85-litre and 3.3-litre straight-six engines, and iconic Holden 4.2-litre and 5.0-litre V8 units, mated to manual or three-speed automatic transmissions. Over its decade-long run, it evolved through five distinct series: VB (1978), VC (1980 with electronic spark timing), VH (1981 with aerodynamic tweaks), VK (1984 with a six-light glasshouse and electronic fuel injection), and VL (1986, which famously adopted Nissan 3.0-litre RB30E naturally aspirated and turbocharged straight-six engines along with an export diesel). Markets included Australia, New Zealand, and selected Asia-Pacific regions.
