Launched in September 1998, the Holden Astra TS series was based on the European Opel Astra G platform and became one of the most successful and acclaimed compact cars in Australian automotive history. Built on GM's updated T-platform with a fully galvanized steel body, the TS offered substantially greater cabin space, structural rigidity, and torsional stiffness compared to its predecessor. The model range was remarkably diverse, featuring three- and five-door hatchbacks, a four-door sedan, a five-door station wagon, and stylish Coupe and Convertible models designed and assembled by Bertone in Italy. The core powertrain was a 1.8-litre 16-valve Ecotec inline-four delivering 85 kW (later upgraded to 92 kW). Enthusiasts were catered to with the introduction of the 2.2-litre SRi (108 kW) and the flagship 2.0-litre turbocharged SRi Turbo producing 147 kW. Transmissions included a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic. A mid-cycle refresh in 2001 refined the suspension tuning, interior trim, and standard safety features. Due to strong market demand, the TS remained in production alongside its successor until 2006 under the Astra Classic designation.
