Introduced in late 2004, the fifth-generation Holden Astra AH was engineered on General Motors' Delta I architecture, identical to the European Opel Astra H. The AH series represented a significant technological evolution, featuring sharp exterior styling, high-strength steel construction, and an optional adaptive chassis system with continuous damping control (IDSPlus). The comprehensive body lineup included three-door (GTC) and five-door hatchbacks, an extended-wheelbase station wagon, a four-door sedan imported from Poland from 2008, and the innovative TwinTop coupe-convertible with an electro-hydraulic three-piece retractable steel roof. Powertrain options began with a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated petrol unit developing 92 kW (later 103 kW), alongside a 2.2-litre direct-injection petrol engine (110 kW) and a potent 2.0-litre turbo generating up to 177 kW in the high-performance Astra VXR hot hatch. The AH was also the first Astra in Australia to offer 1.9-litre CDTi turbodiesel engines delivering up to 110 kW. Transmissions ranged from five- and six-speed manuals to four- and six-speed automatic gearboxes. A 2007 facelift updated front styling and cabin trim before the model was phased out in 2009.
