Holden Astra III (TR) gallery (1995–1998)

Following the dissolution of the joint venture with Toyota, General Motors reintroduced the Astra nameplate to Australia in September 1995 with the TR series, which was a direct import of the European Opel Astra F based on the GM T-body architecture. Manufactured primarily in the United Kingdom and New Zealand, the TR brought European dynamics, advanced build quality, and superior occupant protection to the Australasian market. The lineup included a five-door hatchback, a four-door sedan, and a five-door estate station wagon. Powertrain choices were derived from GM's Ecotec engine family, starting with a 1.6-litre 16-valve four-cylinder producing 74 kW for the City and GL trims, alongside a larger 2.0-litre eight-valve four-cylinder generating 85 kW in the sporty GSi trim. Gearbox choices included a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic transmission. Standard and optional features were modern for the era, incorporating driver airbags, side-impact protection bars, power steering, and antilock braking systems. The TR was praised for its balanced chassis and comfortable long-distance cruising ability until its replacement in 1998.
