Holden Astra I (LB/LC) photos

The first-generation Holden Astra was introduced in August 1984 as a result of a joint venture and badge-engineering partnership between General Motors-Holden and Nissan Motor Australia. Built on Nissan's front-wheel-drive N12 platform at Nissan's Clayton facility in Victoria, the vehicle was tailored specifically for the Australian and New Zealand automotive markets. Initially launched as the LB series, it was sold strictly as a five-door hatchback in SL/X and SL/E trim levels. In April 1986, the revised LC series brought cosmetic updates, revised tail lamps, a new grille, and expanded body configurations including a three-door hatchback and a four-door sedan. Mechanically, the LB relied on Nissan's 1.5-litre carburetted four-cylinder E15 engine generating approximately 52 kW, whereas the updated LC series gained a larger 1.6-litre E16 powerplant producing 54 kW. Transmission options consisted of a standard five-speed manual gearbox and an optional three-speed automatic. The interior featured practical cloth upholstery, straightforward instrumentation, and fold-down rear seating. Front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion-beam axle delivered predictable handling suited for urban environments.
