Introduced in 2006, the S-MAX Mk1 shared the EUCD platform with the Mondeo Mk4 and Galaxy. It pioneered a sporty family MPV concept, blending dynamic Kinetic Design styling with versatile 7-seat capacity. The FoldFlatSystem (FFS) allowed second and third-row seats to collapse flush into the floor.

Powertrains included 2.0-liter, 2.3-liter, and 2.0-liter EcoBoost engines, along with a 220-hp 2.5-liter 5-cylinder turbo engine shared with the Focus ST. Diesels ranged up to a 200-hp 2.2 TDCi.
