About this generation
The third generation of the North American Ford Ranger (1998–2012) introduced a short/long-arm independent front suspension, four-door SuperCab access, and an all-electric EV variant.
Introduced for 1998, the third-generation North American Ford Ranger received significant chassis engineering updates. The legacy Twin-I-Beam front suspension was replaced with a modern short/long-arm (SLA) independent front suspension using torsion bars on 4WD models and coil springs on 4x2 models, providing car-like ride quality and precise steering. Ford also introduced an industry-first four-door SuperCab configuration with rear-hinged doors, making rear-seat loading far more convenient for owners.
Gasoline engines included 2.3-liter and 2.5-liter four-cylinders, a 3.0-liter V6, and a powerful 4.0-liter SOHC V6 generating 207 horsepower. Between 1998 and 2002, Ford produced the battery-electric Ranger EV for commercial fleets. The pickup underwent cosmetic refreshes in 2001, 2004, and 2006, receiving bolder grilles, raised hood designs, and the off-road FX4 trim package featuring Bilstein shocks. Safety was upgraded in 2010 with standard AdvanceTrac stability control with Roll Stability Control (RSC) before production ended in December 2011.
