Debuting for the 1979 model year, the third-generation Mustang utilised the unibody rear-wheel-drive Fox platform. Its styling departed completely from classic heritage cues, adopting sharp edges and rectangular headlights influenced by contemporary European automobile design. Available body configurations included a notchback coupe, a three-door hatchback, and a factory convertible introduced for the 1983 model year.
Powertrain options spanned four-cylinder engines in naturally aspirated and turbocharged forms, V6 units, and the celebrated 5.0-liter High Output V8. The Special Vehicle Team later created the high-performance Cobra and Cobra R models.
