Debuting in Europe in 1998 to replace the long-running Escort, the Focus Mk1 set fresh standards for driving dynamics in the competitive C-segment. Its striking New Edge design language was complimented by an innovative Control Blade independent rear suspension setup that delivered benchmark handling balance. The model family encompassed three-door and five-door hatchbacks, a four-door sedan, and a versatile station wagon.

Engine choices included smooth Zetec petrol units and direct-injection TDCi turbodiesel engines for daily commuting efficiency. The performance hierarchy featured the ST170 and the legendary limited-production Focus RS, equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and a Quaife helical limited-slip differential. The Focus Mk1 was awarded European Car of the Year in 1999 for its ground-breaking chassis design.
