About this generation

The sixth-generation Explorer returned to a rear-wheel-drive CD6 architecture, featuring ST models and PHEV options.

Launching for 2020, the sixth-generation Explorer (U625) adopted Ford's modular CD6 platform with a longitudinal engine orientation and primary rear-wheel-drive bias. This structural shift enhanced towing limits, athletic proportions, and dynamic handling balance. The revised interior offered an optional portrait-oriented touchscreen.

Engines range from a 300-hp 2.3-liter EcoBoost to a 400-hp 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 in the Explorer ST, alongside a 457-hp Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) variant for European markets. A 2024 interior refresh introduced Google Built-In technology and BlueCruise hands-free driving assistance. The lasting engineering impact of this generation remains a key benchmark in Ford's global model evolution history. Known for its dependable mechanical layout, the vehicle built a loyal customer base across diverse driving conditions. Offered with versatile feature packages, this iteration successfully balanced day-to-day usability with solid resale value.
