Arriving for 1995, the second-generation Explorer (UN105) featured thoroughly redesigned front sheet metal and a modern interior. Replacing the previous Twin-Traction Beam setup, a new independent short-long arm front suspension significantly refined ride quality and steering control. Safety features expanded with dual front airbags.

Powertrain choices were bolstered by the addition of a 5.0-liter Windsor V8 engine alongside upgraded 4.0-liter Cologne V6 variants (OHV and SOHC). The ControlTrac automatic four-wheel-drive system automatically routed power to the front wheels upon detecting rear wheel slippage.
