Buick Excelle I (J200) gallery (2003–2016)

The first-generation Buick Excelle was introduced in China in 2003 as a localized adaptation of the Daewoo Lacetti compact car built on the GM J200 platform. It was offered in three body configurations: a traditional four-door sedan, a five-door hatchback known as the Excelle HRV (styled by Italdesign Giugiaro), and a practical five-door station wagon designed by Pininfarina. The initial powertrain offerings consisted of 1.6-liter (106 hp) and 1.8-liter (120 hp) inline-four Twin Cam petrol engines, paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. In 2008, Shanghai GM unveiled a comprehensive mid-cycle facelift for the sedan, introducing Buick's signature waterfall grille and revised lighting. A major technical overhaul occurred in 2013, replacing the older powertrains with an efficient 1.5-liter DVVT four-cylinder engine producing 113 hp coupled to a modern 6-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual gearbox. The first-generation Excelle became one of the best-selling passenger cars in Chinese automotive history, with cumulative sales surpassing 2.68 million units before production ended in 2016.
