BMW 8-series photos

The first-generation BMW 8-series, bearing the E31 chassis code, was manufactured between 1989 and 1999 as a flagship luxury coupe. It became renowned for its wedge profile, pop-up headlights, and pillarless hardtop design. Powertrains included naturally aspirated V8 and V12 engines mated to either a six-speed manual or four- and five-speed automatic transmissions, incorporating advanced rear-axle kinematics.

After a long hiatus, the nameplate returned in 2018 with the second generation built on the CLAR platform. The lineup expanded beyond the traditional G15 coupe to include the G14 soft-top convertible and the G16 Gran Coupe four-door liftback. Engine choices featured turbocharged inline-six and twin-turbo V8 units coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission and available all-wheel drive.

A subsequent mid-lifecycle update refined the exterior lighting, introduced an illuminated front grille, and enhanced interior display electronics. The platform combines adaptive damping and active steering to maintain its dual character of agility and long-distance touring comfort.
