BMW 6-series II (E63/E64) gallery (2003–2010)
Revived after a fourteen-year hiatus, the E63/E64 generation brought futuristic styling, lightweight engineering, and V8 power back to BMW’s flagship coupe lineup.
BMW resurrected the 6 Series moniker in 2003 after a fourteen-year absence, launching the E63 coupe followed shortly by the E64 convertible with its distinctive finned soft top. Designed during Chris Bangle’s controversial design era, the vehicle featured avant-garde exterior surfacing and a sculpted rear deck lid that set it apart from conservative rivals. To optimize weight distribution, BMW utilized aluminum for the front chassis structure and doors, alongside composite materials for the trunk lid, delivering exceptional structural stiffness and agility.
Under the hood, the E63 offered a diverse powertrain lineup anchored by a 4.4-liter N62 V8 engine, later updated to a 4.8-liter unit, as well as a refined 3.0-liter inline-six. Notably, it introduced a twin-turbocharged diesel model, the 635d, which redefined high-speed cruising efficiency. Advanced chassis technologies such as Dynamic Drive active roll stabilization and Active Steering complemented the tech-focused cabin featuring the iDrive interface. Production ended in 2010 after firmly re-establishing BMW’s grand touring presence.
