The Audi RS4 began its lineage with the B5 generation, available exclusively as a high-performance estate wagon powered by a twin-turbocharged V6 engine paired with a six-speed manual gearbox and permanent quattro drive. The subsequent B7 generation broadened the model range by offering sedan, wagon, and convertible body styles, switching to a high-revving naturally aspirated V8 engine.

With the arrival of the B8 platform, the RS4 returned strictly to the versatile wagon format. It utilized an updated atmospheric V8 mated to a fast-shifting dual-clutch transmission, gaining modern driver assists and refined styling during its mid-cycle facelift.

The fourth-generation B9 model marked a return to forced induction with a twin-turbocharged V6 and an automatic transmission. Remaining an estate wagon, it achieved significant weight reductions and sharper handling dynamics on an updated platform.
