Introduced in 1999, the Audi A2 (chassis code 8Z) was a revolutionary subcompact MPV that showcased Audi's advanced engineering capabilities. The vehicle featured an all-aluminum Audi Space Frame (ASF) structure, which reduced body weight by over 40 percent compared to conventional steel equivalents. Combined with a tall one-box silhouette and painstaking aerodynamic optimization, the A2 achieved a class-leading drag coefficient of just Cd 0.28.

Engine offerings included fuel-efficient 1.4 and 1.6 FSI gasoline engines alongside 1.2 TDI and 1.4 TDI turbodiesels. The legendary 1.2 TDI '3L' variant became famous for achieving an astonishing fuel consumption rating of just 3 liters per 100 kilometers.
